Recently I enjoyed a visit to café Louise at Thaden Field. It was fun to dine while watching planes take off and land, as the outdoor and indoor seating face the runway. Louise & the Fieldhouse opened in September 2018, named in honor of Louise McPhetridge Thaden, born in Bentonville in 1905. Louise set many records as an aviator and eliminated obstacles for women of that era. Thaden Fieldhouse is also home to a flight school, an exhibition hangar, an FAA knowledge testing center, scenic flights, discovery flights, lawn games, and fuel provisions. Situated next to Bentonville Lake provides another opportunity to take in a captivating view, and enjoy the park, playground, trails, and canoe rental during the spring and summer months.

I have to admit this sculpture originally caught my eye because hearts are my favorite shape. After reading that the artist, Matthew Duffy, was inspired to create this stunning piece by his deep affection for his wife who was out of the country at the time, of course, I then admired it even more!

Duffy designed the open-air heart with a computer program that uses advanced algorithms to reconstruct 3-D objects using only triangular planes. He experimented with several materials but chose the Aluminum Diamond Plate, as it adds contrasting textures and withstands harsh weather conditions. The artist wanted viewers to be able to look through the piece, so individual triangles were made using a water jet cutting machine. Welding the triangles together completed the brilliant 8ft x 8ft x 2.5ft piece of artwork. It is displayed in the center of the Bright Road roundabout at the intersection of SW Bright Road and SW Gator Blvd.

I tasted and fell in love with this yummy chocolate recently! So I had to explore; after reading about this Chocolate Company, I loved it even more!! It always warms my heart to read about families that give so much of themselves to start a company, that in turn gives back to so many others. Reading their blog post "Living the Dream" explains how this local family's dream began...in 2012 while visiting the slum of Kampala, Uganda with a non-profit board.

This fun sculpture was permanently installed at the corner of Tiger Boulevard and A Street in August 2018. Sassy was created by native Arkansan, Amanda Willshire, and she stands 11 feet tall and weighs about 1,100 pounds! The sculptured shape is made from steel, then the fur was fabricated from recycled bike chains from four different states. I personally think Sassy's best features are her lively lips and her blue eyes that light up at night!
  • Downtown Bentonville may be the hottest location for fine dining restaurants in Northwest Arkansas, but there's a gem that has been a Bentonville establishment since 1999. River Grille is well known to business members, both local and travelers, who frequent the restaurant for client lunches, small meetings or the evening getaway from the hotel, but it's not as well known to the public. Located just off of Exit 88 in Bentonville, tucked into the Beau Terre office complex, River Grille boasts a cozy environment, for both the bar area, as well as dining room. Even during its busiest of times, it's easy to carry on a conversation at your table, with a dining room that may have a total of 20 tables. The decor lends itself to a stately, yet simple experience. The beautiful wood paneling, adorned with Ansel Adams prints, gives the restaurant an elegant look. The combination of those items makes this the ideal date night spot.

Above all, River Grille has two great features that must be called out. Most importantly, the wait staff is amazing. They truly make the experience. In frequenting the place, they go out of the way to get to know you and your tastes. Extending back to the kitchen is the other great feature...great food, how you want it. Don't like what an item has on the menu, just ask for what you would prefer, and they will do their best to make it for you. Fine dining also does not need to be super expensive. They have a wide range of items on the menu at different price points. For example, the large bone in brown sugar bourbon glazed pork chop is amazing for only $25.

When you are looking for fine dining in Bentonville, remember to go off the beaten path for River Grille.

Do you love blown glass art? If so, you must attend the Dale Chihuly Exhibit currently on display at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art through August 14, 2017. If you are in the Bentonville area or visiting anytime before August 14th, I would suggest going online and getting tickets to the Chihuly exhibit. It is well worth the price of admission.

As a member of Crystal Bridges, I was able to get preview access before the exhibit opened to the public. I wandered the outdoor forest for quite a bit before my timed entry to the indoor exhibit. The curators have put together quite the display! The detail and colors of the glassworks are stunning. The way the art is shown really shows the intricate detail of each piece.

If you're new to Bentonville, or just visiting the area, Crystal Bridges Museum is worth a visit. The museum takes its name from Crystal Spring, which is a natural spring on the museum's grounds and from the unique bridge construction that is incorporated into the building design.

Crystal Bridges is not just fascinating for what it holds inside its art collections, but for its architecture on the outside, as well. The museum includes a glass-enclosed gathering hall for lectures, films and other events, as well as a store, restaurant, and areas for outdoor concerts and public events. There are walking and biking trails running through its large 120-acre grounds, allowing visitors to explore the beautiful Ozark landscape in addition to the American art collections inside.

Crystal Bridges' permanent collection spans five centuries of American masterworks ranging from the Colonial era to the current day.
