The Heber Springs Commercial Historic District is the heart of Heber Springs, Arkansas. It feels like something out of a movie driving dowtown. When the Christmas Parade, Homecoming Parade, or Old Soldiers Reunion comes to town, the community comes together and it is a beautiful sight. Every year, the town holds the Trail of Holiday Lights, where before the parade, the lawn of the Cleburne County Courthouse is flooded with the citizens of Heber Springs to see the lighting of the historical building. The district runs along Main Street, between Broadway and 6th Street, including several buildings along some of the cross streets. There are small businesses that are staples to the community along Main Street. The area was developed beginning in 1881, and grew in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, featuring a diversity of commercial architecture from that period. The Morton Building at 101 South 3rd Street, is the city's oldest surviving commercial building, built in 1895.

Magness Lake is a small oxbow off the Little Red River. Every year, more than 100 trumpeter swans descend upon it. Their stay extends from late November through February. Chances of seeing numbers of the trumpet swans are best in late afternoons. During the day, they roam around in small groups, feeding in spots sometimes miles away. But they return to the lake before dark. A few of the swans usually hang around the lake during midday, too. Shelled corn is the only recommended feed. There is no cost to view the birds. To get to the established viewing area drive east on Ark. 110 from its intersection with Ark. 5 and 25 just east of Heber Springs. Go 3.9 miles from the intersection to Sovereign Grace Baptist Church, marked with a white sign. Turn left on Hays Road, a paved county road. The lake is about a half-mile down this road, and a gravel parking area is at an S curve in the road.

The Swinging Bridge is an area of the Little Red River popular among the locals as well as tourists. It’s a great place to fish and has a boat launch for those who want to get on the water. It’s named the Swinging Bridge for a suspension bridge that once connected one side of the river to the other. In 1989 a church group of about forty people decided to swing the bridge from side to side. The bridge collapsed, killing five people and injuring dozens. It was a devastating event for the community. Today, you can still see the towers on either side of the river where the bridge used to be.

Little Red River starting from beneath the dam at Greers Ferry Lake is a premier-class trout stream. Rainbows, browns and cutthroats are caught for some 35-river miles below the dam. A 40-pound, four-ounce world record brown was caught on the river in 1992...a mark that stood until 2009.

Brown trout running 5 to 8 pounds are common, and a 20 to 30 pounder is always possible in the river. The brown trout spawning run occurs from mid-October through November, making these especially good times to fish. This popular Ozark Mountain tail water trout stream is beautiful in its own special way, running clear and cold, skirted by scenic hardwood hillsides alive with wildlife such as otters, raccoons, deer, ducks, songbirds and eagles.

The Gem Theater opened in 1939 and seats about 250 patrons. The Gem Theater burned to the ground on December 7, 1941 and was rebuilt less than half a year later. In 1949, it became the first public building in the town with air-conditioning. Fast forward to 1995 when the interior was entirely rebuilt in a style that complemented the Art Deco facade. At that time, the exterior was restored and relit, looking very similar to its 1940’s appearance. Today it is our only movie theater and enjoyed by all.

Take a climb up Sugarloaf Mountain located east of Heber Springs. My family, even the smaller ones, love hiking up the mountain. There are three trails to choose from. The Summit Trail which leads to the base of the summit and is the most difficult. The Hidden Pond Trail which is pretty easy and relatively flat. It offers a picnic table near the pond and a 90' bridge with seating. The newest trail is the Tonawanda Base Trail and is the longest at 1.3 miles. It is moderate difficulty with small hills. There are benches along the way. Make it to the top for some awesome panoramic views of the area.
